Artistic Wood Turners
Newsletter
June 2010
Another month has just gone by. Where
does the time go?
This month’s Sawdust session will soon be here. We have a few things planned for you to see. Al McCoy will show you how to use a chatter tool to enhance a finish. He will show you how to make your own chatter tool. Al will be assisting Mike Demaline with a demo on making a segmented bowl. Bill Bryan will show you how to do a Hollow Form providing there is enough time to complete this schedule.
The Club Challenge for this meeting will be turning a small-stemmed goblet. Sorry for the short notice, but you still have about 5 days to prepare for the challenge so get busy and turn in something. You will be the winner.
A heads up for the July
meeting a sign up sheet will be passed around for you to sign up for a covered
dish to bring to that meeting.
At the July meeting, we will be having our annual BBQ lunch for the 4th
of July celebration a little late. Ralph Thomas will be cooking the BBQ.
The club will be having a show and tell for the Ladies, so bring two of your best creations so they can see what you have been doing. Remember they are your inspiration.
See you Saturday the 19th at 9 am.

An other Saturday with the termites.

Looks like we have some visitors, Welcome.

Norm is doing his thing, this auction brings in money to
support the our clubs activities. Thanks to Leland for this box of exotic woods.

Durk keeps turning for Darla, I have caught a good smile on
his face, eyes open for a change.

I must confess I missed the type of wood he made this turning
from.

A lidded box from George.

I believe the wood is Holly.

Bill Hoff has turned some different types of turnings.

Two goblets with natural edges with very thin stems. Good Job.

Here he holds a very thin footed piece of spaulted Oak. Bill
was inspired by Michael Hosaluk. Nice to see some different shapes.

Jack holds up a trivet made of Corian made by Jim Burt with a
bottom made from segmented walnut he added.

Here Mark holds up the fish he got at the auction made by
Michael Hosaluk and he finished it.

This turning from Michael a lidded box is still in the
finishing stage. Mark says he still has to finish the inside. Great job.

Tristan holds up a wand that he made for a band director, in a
very nice case.

Nice to see Mike Veal turning again after an illness he has
overcome.

Nice finish Mike.

Bill Bryan has the demo for the month. He is showing the club
how to turn a thin stemmed goblet. Start out with a piece of round stock a nice
piece of Holly and start shaping from this end. Hollow out the inside.

Then shape the outside of the goblet as you go.

Work on the shape inside and out. In the following photos.

You then support the goblet with your own device such as Bill
is doing here. He uses a live center that he has placed a tennis ball on the
end. He then inserts it into the goblet to steady the turning while he does the
thin stem. The secret is keep down the vibration. You must be careful and use a
sharp tool.

Then part off the goblet with a Parting tool and finish your
turning.

Put a nice bottom on your goblet. Thanks Bill for your Demo.
