Artistic Woodturners

Newsletter

March 2010

Here is some information for the next meeting on the 20th, as most of you know we will be having a professional wood turner from Canada for two days. His name is Michael Hosaluk a very instructive turner.

We will not have a regular meeting; this demo is for those that purchased tickets.

Attendees will be on your own for lunch during the break. There is several fast food and restaurants in the general vicinity.

The club challenge for the month of April will be, turn an Easter egg any size. If you remember our last paid turner Alan Lacer said that making an egg is a very good training device.

See you with Michael!

Waiting for the sawdust session to start.

Fred conducting his last meeting as President. Thank you Fred for the good year as our leader.

Mr. John Byl the new president of the Mobile club introducing himself to our club, he is replacing the outgoing Brad Swiger.

A box of Leland's Logs for auction.

Norm conducting the auction. Taking bids on a mortising attachment for a drill press.

Show and tell table looks good, is that a coffee mug (blue) for an entry.

The rest of the turnings presented. Keep bringing the new creations.

For show and tell we have the latest class taught by Bo he is showing our members a few at a time how to make a gouge with either a round tip or a square tip. If you want to make one contact Bo.

Nice looking pair of tools. They work very well I am told.

Bill Hoff explains what the foam is for, he said that it came in handy for sanding his turnings keeps it in place.

Bill has started turning with a passion and here they are.  This bowl is Oak and not spaulted.

This bowl is made from a piece of spaulted Oak, nice shape.

A thin walled turning made from spaulted Magnolia.

A natural edged piece of spaulted Magnolia.

Bill Bryan holds up a platter made from Purpleheart very unusual color.

Here he holds several goblets. He says he loves to turn them.

A nice platter.

Brad displays two pepper mills. He said this is the first he has turned since November, he was under the weather for awhile. Welcome back.

Darnell turns a crotch with a bowl in the center very different. A nice idea.

How did you do that? very carefully I'll bet.

Nice natural edge turning. Two in one.

Very nice vase I like the design and technique the wood is green popcorn.
Darnell says it turns very well.

Another great design the patterns are ancient Indians from the southwest good show Darnell.

This segmented turning was a long time in the making. Al said it started out to be a burial urn, then it sat for quite a while. Ralph Gaither a local carver and turner in our club encouraged Al to finish the project.

Allen Franklin our newest member shows off these two turnings. Allan says Larry Starkey loaned him some tools and gave him some pointers and now he is on his way. Looking forward to his next entries.

Georges latest turning with a very nice pattern feathers and flowers.

This is made from Maple.

Mike shows his latest segmented bowl the main wood is Padauk and you can purchase it from Mike Peters or Lorin Later both members of our club.

A Southwest motif sets off this turning.

Tristen shows us his pen collection.

Very nice choice of woods glued together to form the patterns shown here.

Here Tristen shows us his sharpening rig made from plywood, he says it works well for his skews and gouges. Build it yourself for your needs, don't let anything stand in your way, keep moving ahead.

Here Ed Kust shows us his first turned bowl for show and tell. Keep them  coming and you will be a great turner. Due to the fact I was doing a demo I didn't have time for any more photos. I still haven't been able to be in two places at once.
