Here it is September three months into the hurricane season and we have been blessed with very few storms. Pray that we can keep it that way. Giving us time to do the things we want to do with our time.
The September meeting will feature the Christmas tree ornament. We will be having several demonstrations on different types of ornaments. For the newer members our club has committed to the Optimist Club of Pensacola to furnish ornaments for their Christmas tree sale that they have annually. The sale of the ornaments helps support some of their projects. The demonstration is a refresher for the club and most of all to recruit our new members to help in the creation of these treasures.
The committee is interested in helping you become better turners by being
informed about the possibilities of what you can do with a lathe. We are asking
you for your input as to what you would like to learn.
We have a mentoring program for you to learn the thing you want to do, a
one on one with one of our mentors, all you have to do is ask one of the
officers to get you in touch with a mentor. A list of the mentors follows Al
McCoy, Jack Diamond, Bill Bryan, George McClure, Fred Bond, and Ralph Thomas, if
I forgot you let me know so I can include you next time.

We are ready for another good meeting.

Keep an open mind for what you are about to see. A mind is
like a parachute it has to be open to work. If there is something you would like
to learn or have someone do a demo on please let the committee know so we can
act on your request.

Looking at the attendance we have some new faces and some that
have been missing for awhile. Welcome everyone!

We have changed the order of the meeting by doing the demos
first. Hope you like this change. The committee felt like some members were
missing the demos because they sometimes had to leave early and missed the
information that was being put out.

Bill preparing the wood for his turning.

Bill shows the members how to turn a goblet.

Good job Bill.

George McClure shows us how to turn a candle stick. Fred Bond
did a demo and Ralph had a demo outside showing members how to use a chain saw
to prepare wood for their lathes. Sorry I don't have pictures of that demo. I
was inside doing a demo on the importance of keeping your tools sharp, I have
not been able to master doing two things at the same time yet. Sorry about that.

Ralph our auctioneer doing another fine job. Norm called me a
few days later and asked me if he missed the meeting. This happens when the
first Saturday is on the first day of the month. This month is on the 19th a
little better.

The auction is one way to put money into the treasury for our
projects. Bring nice wood for the auction.

Darnell shows us his method of piercing with this collection
of ornaments made from some nice Red Cedar. Darnell, George and Ralph spend a
lot of time at their lathes, thank you fellows for your efforts.

He used a drill to do the piercing.

Here he shows the indexer made out of a clock face and a stop
block, this gives him 60 stops with many combinations in between great idea. He
provided some copies of the clock face to others so they could try making their
own indexer.

George tried something new ringed bowls they turned out very
well.

His comment was don't use soft plywood for a ring, it is
softer than the other wood and created a problem both turning and sanding as
shown here the small ring is recessed. He says it isn't a good idea. Thanks for
your effort and turnings, keep them coming.

Thanks George for all you do.

James shows us a variety of turnings a very good selection of
thin walled bowls. He turned these at a masterclass with David
Ellsworth at the Anderson Ranch Arts Center earlier in August. Great.

Here Mark McClain holds up one of his hollow forms that he
turned for S&T. Great job!
Mark finishes his turnings with gun stock finish which gives a hard finish. Ask
him for the correct name for the finish. I have a problem CRS.

Nice color.

The knot stayed in place, did you use super glue?

Al holds up an urn made from Padauk. This wood is available
from Mike Peters or Loren (Parting Tool) Later both of our club. Al says this
wood turns very well.

Brad Swiger shows us his creations of hats. very nice fedoras.
Brad says if you are thinking about turning a hat you need to start with the
greenest wood you can find.

Nice fit Brad.

Nice design Bill keep the lathe turning no telling what might
happen.

Mike shows a bowl made from zebrawood with a Padauk rim nice
design. Thank you for showing us that you can make a real bowl, not everything
needs to be a hollow form.

Here mike shows his washbasin that he is making for in his
bathroom, he is doing some remodeling. All he has to do is find a finish for the
bowl.

Ralph continues to come up with some nice colors for his
turnings that he is making for sale in the shows he will be participating in
this fall.

Nice finish on all of his turnings.

A very nice collection of shapes and colors your customers
will be pleased with your selections. Thank you for all you do for out club.

Here Bob Wolfe holds his first turning in our S&T, he just
joined the club and has started to participate. He recently retired from the US
Air Force. Welcome to the Artistic Wood Turners Club keep your lathe turning,
the only way to learn this skill.

Thank you Bob.

Nice collection of turnings.

Many thanks to those that participate in this part of the
meeting. See you at our September meeting on the 19th. We will be showing you
how to make ornaments.
