This month we will be having Mark McClain doing his first club demonstration. I think it will be on finishing. Come and support him as he strives to teach some old dog a few new tricks.

At this meeting the rest of the membership will be bringing some of their homemade rigs and tricks. Bo Flanders and Ralph built a hollowing rig that will be shown. Al McCoy has a laser light he attached to a hand held cutter an a few other helpful Items. James and George McClure have some things they have produced. If you have anything that you use as an aid please bring it to share with others.

We will have a visitor from the Mobile club his name is Brad Swiger. Brad will be talking about the first Greater Gulf Coast Symposium in Biloxi, Ms. that is now in the planning stage. He will need a volunteer to represent our club and serve on the symposium board of directors, if you would like to volunteer let Fred know.

The month of July the club will be having a BBQ, so bring your better half. This will also be the Gift exchange. The club Challenge is a turned bowl, max dimensions 7”x4”, you still have time to prepare your entry, so get busy.

In August we will have a Sawdust hands on session, we are looking for some volunteers to man one of the lathes with something new for the members. There are so many ideas that need explored if you have one please let Bill Bryan know since he is organizing this session and let him know you want to help.

We have the Safety Minute back in the meeting so bring your safety suggestion.

The web site of the month is http://en.wikipedia.org Check it out.

See you at the Meeting 6/20/09 0900. Good turning to all.

Looks like a smaller crowd than usual. Segmenting turning doesn't get everyone excited may be the reason.

Listen up Mates your President is talking to you.

Words of wisdom from your leader. One up and coming event in 2010 is Michael Hosaluk This one is worth waiting for.

This is your Treasure for the club, he collects dues, receives money for the auctions and does demonstrations when the opportunity arises.

Bill Bryan shows a bowl made from a piece of Pecan.

Cheryl Ross shows off a collaboration from her and Leland. He turns the boxes and she adds the polymer clay.

Another one of their efforts.

Darnell shows a nice natural edge bowl.

Here Darnell has a collection of bracelets, he said once he got started it was hard to quit.

Durk shows his latest. Look for something different this month.

George shows some of his airbrushing, said he had something for everyone.

Gator Fans something for you.

A very large acorn for all you nuts out there. Nice job George.

Jack has taken up making bottles, who knows what is next steam pipes and mash.

Here he holds up mug for the mash or is it a pencil holder. He was heard saying he made the segments from scratch using no calculator and no computer, he free handed the segments and cut on his band saw. Good show.

We had two new presentations from some cute attendees who wanted to  show off their books.

Older sister shows her book.

Father James shows off his huge button, You should have seen the shirt it came off.

Another button a spaulted one at that, Nice job James.

Mike Peters shows off bowls made from some of the wood he has for sell, here he holds a nice piece of Purple heart.

Here he shows you a Zebra bowl from a collection of wood he has.

More Zebra, this time stained. Nice wood Mike.

Al's part of the segmenting demo, shows how to use the program he has on his computer.
The program is for sale at www.segmentedturning.com the program is $39.95 if you are interested. If you are interested in a one on one demo call me to set up a time.

Al holds up a copy of the bowl created on the screen. Mike uses a calculator and some formulas that do just as well with plenty of options. The out come is great.

Mike has their attention.

Mike's sanding rig for finishing off his segments before he glues them together. The sander came from Harbor Freight and he fabricated the slide from corean and miter from a table saw,

Notice he has a push stick with the angle he is sanding for exact fit.

Notice how he tries to keep his fingers out of the way.

A glued up stick that he cuts his pieces for his feature ring.

Mike glues up one of the rings he will add to his bowl. The glue he uses and a hose clamp to hold the pieces together while they dry. Mike reports that he has never had a glue separation since he has been turning segmented bowls. Al has the same report.

Notice the bowl is chucked and glued, now he is adding another ring using a piece of plywood to hold it place while the glue sets up. He turned this bowl in less than 30 min. of drying time.

Tighten the tailstock to hold ring in place while glue dries.

Ready to turn, notice he has finished the inside as he goes.

Finishing the outside.

Its just a matter of turning the outside to your satisfaction till finished.

Thank you Mike for your effort, I'm sure the attendees learned a few tips to make their own segmented bowl.
