Artistic Woodturners
December 2008
Newsletter
We are approaching the most holy days of the year, the Christmas season. We the committee sends you glad tidings for your Holiday season, may you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
When all of the gifts are chosen we will have a show and tell. This way the
persons who turned the gift will get the opportunity to give the club the
details as to how the piece was created. See
ya there!!!

Opening the meeting is Mike, looks like he borrowed a shirt
from OB or Leland, then again he couldn't wear Leland's shirt. He is in full
bloom.

A nice group has shown up for the Christmas demonstration to make ornaments for
the Optimist Club to sell in their annual Christmas tree sale.

Mike gives us the Treasures report. We have money to bring in a professional
turner to teach some new tricks. The committee is open for suggestions as to who
you would like to see, let us know.

Two visitors to help beautify our meeting. Wives of Darnell and Sergei Thank you
for coming.

Larry Sauls shows off a nice lidded box. Larry is one of our newer
members.

Bo shows us some ornaments that he turned.

Here Bill holds up two platters he turned out of the same piece of purple heart,
one from the sap wood, guess which one. Looks like Bill has been busy. As he
used to say "I wait till I have personal relations with a piece of wood
then get an inspiration to turn." Thanks Bill.

Darnell has been very busy turning for Christmas gifts, this clock and more.

More is better. Thanks for your participation Darnell.

Mike makes a segmented ornament for the Christmas season.

Here are some of the ornaments he has made. Thank you Mike.

Frank shows his lidded box not quite big enough for his teeth. (In his former
life he was a dentist and still is, show us your choppers.)

Frank shows a nice segmented bowl. Very good. A Strong bowl.

Jack shows off a very nice segmented ornament with a different pattern. Good
job.

James McClure shows you how to patch a hole using some different wood.
Maybe we can get him to do a demo so we can learn to use that technique. (Howd
you do that).

Here Les shows us his latest creation, filling the holes with a mixture of super
glue and ?

I believe that is a bud vase.

Ralph shows off one of many natural edge bowls check the Show and tell table for
more of his turnings.

Mike shows his spark stick. I understand he caught a cotton ball on fire with
his stick. They work very well.

Larry is demonstrating his toothpick holder, one of the best I have ever seen.
Keeping the turnings coming in.

Ray shows off a peppermill. Looks like cherry to me. If you would like to make a
peppermill for yourself talk to Al McCoy for some help. I have some of the
grinders I will sell you a mechanism for cost and show you how to make one. Nice
mill Ray.

Mark holds up four different styles of ornaments, Inside/Outside, two Sea
urchins, and a Celtic knot and the following.

Part of the S&T table quite a variety of turnings

More.

More good things. Looks like we are getting more turnings as of late keep them
coming.

Our once a year visit from Sergei, he has taken up painting his chess pieces
before he turns them, very interesting concept a visual before turning, keeps
your memory clear.

Here he holds up two of the chess pieces.

Ralph holds our monthly auction. Looks like some fresh cut wood looks like
dogwood from here at the keyboard. I missed the meeting.

Our demonstration setup is around the outside walls and four or five lathes set
up to make ornaments for the Optimist club's Christmas tree sale.

Looks like Jack has Sergei's attention.

George shows a different way to make an ornament.

Jack uses a jig that he developed just for making Ornaments.

McBroom uses a different method to get his ornaments.

Robert discusses how to use his sharpening jig to keep his tools sharp for
turning which is a must for successful turning. A sharp tool is a good cutting
tool and makes turning easier.

A sample of ornaments from several turners.
I would like to thank Russ Revels for taking the photos for me while I was gone.
He did an outstanding job.
AL McCoy
Leland's' Sawmill Party

The mill was setup before we arrived an Leland's lot, started after we arrived
around 8:30 am

Leland had some nice wood from the trees that he cut from his lot.

Set up and ready to go.

Two cold old geezers waiting for some action.

Here Bruce brushes off the sawdust before putting into the Van for transporting
to the shop for storing.

Bruce, Durk and Russ preparing some more wood for the pile.

Come on sun were a little cold.

3x3's for Leland's legs.

More brushing to remove the sawdust.

R to L Jim Korndorfer, Ralph, Dr. J and friend. Everyone had a fine time helping
a friend in need. The lunch was very good at the Kirin for those that attended.
Thanks to Larry Sauls for some of the photos he took. Told me you never get in
the pictures so he came to make sure I was photographed. Looks like he missed
all of the fun.
