ArtisticWoodturners

                                               October 2008 Newsletter

Hope you have had a productive month turning in your shops making the turnings that make you happy. Turning is very good therapy for me. I don’t know about the rest of you.

This month our demonstration will be George McClure. He will be showing us how to use his wood-burning tool on platters, hollow forms, and bowls.

Some of our members may be interested in participating in the St Anne’s Annual Christmas Market Arts & Crafts weekend December 6-7 2008. For more information you can call Martha Krehely at 850-456-3731 or by e-mail mlkrehely@aol.com the event will take place in their Family Life Center.

I just want to remind you that the Pensacola Interstate Fair is coming up quickly. If you want to place your entries in the show call Bert Black at 476-4105 for more details.

It has been awhile since we have had a professional turner do a demo for the club. The committee is looking for input from the membership as to what you want, so give the committee your ideas.

We have a Safety Moment segment each month for the members, I believe this is a very important time to share our experiences as to what safety is as it applies to the individual. Remember only you can prevent some of the things that happen on your lathe. We all turn most of our stuff in our shops alone, so there is no one to stop you from doing something harmful except YOU. Always wear a protective mask, no long-sleeved shirts, watches, rings anything that could catch on a high speed turning. Remember if you think it may not be safe don’t do it. Let us know if you had a close call, it should be helpful in preventing an accident.

As you know our club has been involved with the Optimist Club’s money raising project by making ornaments for them to sale during their Christmas Tree sale during the month of November. We wish to remind you to make some ornaments for them.

The next meeting we will be having a ornament turning event to help them.

See you on the 18th of October.

Hello you all hope we live up to your expectations.

We had some late comers. So the crowd was a normal one.

Mike is back home from Seattle. He was "Sleepless in Seattle" keeping up with his grandchildren He said he had a great time.

The auction was very productive thanks to Parting Tool, Leland and others. We took in about $260

Thanks Norm and Ralph for a good auction.

Bill has another fine turning.

Bryan shows us his stuff. Can't remember what he said.

Darnell explains how this turning kept him busy and said he should have quit but you know turners are stubborn and never give in to a piece of wood.

Frank Dubose shows off one of his turnings he made for his wife, he said that George McClure did most of the turning showing him how to use some of the turning tools.

Frank is on his way. Keep the lathe turned on and you will succeed. Thank you George for being his mentor.

Another fine job by Mark. Keep bringing them in you are an inspiration.

Ralph shows us part of a burl that he used his One Way center saver on, making several bowls from one piece of wood. I think the burl was from a sweet gum tree. A side note and a humorous one at that, while at the Louisville Symposium one of the female turners swears that the burl come from a burl tree.

This center saver gives you many choices while turning. Just think if you pay big bucks for a piece of wood and get one turning and a big pile of wood chips or many turnings and a small pile of chips. Ralph will show in his demo how to use his Center Saver.

Frank makes a nice lidded box. Keep bringing in your turnings. Hope they inspire others to do the same.

I always thought Chuck was spaced out, how about you. He probably talked to Mork for this inspiration. Good job, what's next?

Some fine turnings have been turned as you can see. Hope this will inspire you to join in with the participants and bring in your own ideas, with the many shapes you have to choose from. Use your imagination like you used to when you were a kid, and turn them Dreams.

Look who came buy to visit us, Russ with a modern electric car.

Ralph's Demo will be using the One Way center saver. As you can see he has laid out the cutting lines to follow and the small amount of chips. He showed the club two ways to core out the bowls starting with the large one first then...................

reversed the core to turn a tenon so he can remount the wood. The reason to do this to make sure you get the largest bowl completed. Mike Mahoney said during his demo that this was the priority, he wanted that one flaw free. Because of the high dollar cost of the wood.

Remounted to continue removing the core. At this stage Ralph could have cut the smaller one out of the center, then moving to the next core etc. saving a few steps, but he wanted to show you this method during his demo. He will have three nice bowl to finish. He auctioned off the bowls and the money went into our treasury. Thank you for the demo and the donation.

Bill Bryan showed the club how he makes a goblet. This was a special one for Bill, he just came back from a trip to Europe. He saw an old glass goblet in a museum about 300 years old and was trying to duplicate the shape.

Bill said he didn't get it like he wanted, but it turned out very well. I believe the wood was a piece of cherry. Good Show bill!

Jack had a jig and fixture demo, but we ran out of time. Here he discusses the method he uses to make a fixture for holding ornaments. Next time we will make sure we have time for all the demonstrations. I know he put in a lot of time getting ready for the show. Thanks Jack.

Leland has a load of wood to share with the members. He wants to have a wood cutting party on the week end of 25 an 26th of October at his place on Brent Lane. He said he would have his big band saw set up and has chain saws to cut up the wood. If you are interested let him know. He is giving you the wood and it will be cut up into manageable pieces for your lath all you have to do is show up and help. Call Al McCoy at 434-1687 or Leland at 476-4616 if you are coming.
