ArtisticWoodturners

September 2008 Newsletter

Hope you all survived the storms that went thru the area, without any damage to your home. There may be more to come, hard to tell at this time what IKE will do, the weather channel is leaning towards New Orleans who don’t need another one this year.

For our up and coming meeting we will have, Ralph Thomas showing how he uses his center saver to produce his turnings for drying. Ralph finishes about 6 to 8 bowls a week ready to sell at the craft shows he attends, he says that he has very good luck with the public and the prices he charges his customers.

Jack Diamond and Al McCoy will be showing how to make a jig for turning Christmas Ornaments. The demo will take you from turning a block of wood and taping a 1” 8 tpi hole in the block to fit your lathe, then gluing the T-nut and truing up the Jig.

If Bill Brian is back, he will demo making a goblet, for the new people who have never seen one being turned.

In October, George McClure will demonstrate how he does his wood burning on bowls, platters and such, should be very interesting, so put it on your calendar.

The Flora-Bama Cut-Ups will be accepting entries for the Fair in their booth at the fairgrounds, Tuesday October the 14th from 2-8 pm and on Wednesday the 15th and from 2-4 pm.

The entries will be judged after 4 on the 15th. For those of you that have entries in the show, they can pick  up, Saturday @ 9:30 pm the 24th, or Sunday the 25th @ 10 am. If you want to enter some of your work you can get an application from Al McCoy, call him at 434-1687.

On December 6 and 7 St. Anne’s will be having their Annual Christmas Market Arts and Crafts Weekend. If you want to enter call Al for the details.

In the November meeting the committee wanted to have a club participation meeting, where you bring your midi lathe, and the club will turn Ornaments for the Optimist Club Tree sale. If you want to make some ornaments for the optimist club, you don’t have to wait till our meeting. See you on the 20th.

For the members that don’t know, the Woodmen decided not to sell the building so we don’t have to move.

Russ is running the meeting for Mike who took a vacation to visit his grandchildren in Seattle. Thank You !!

Jack has good news about our meeting place. He said that the Woodmen members voted overwhelmingly not to sell the property.

Thanks to Leland for the wood. Leland went on a field trip but sent his wood Thanks from the club.

Now Show and Tell

Bill Donahue shows his lidded box with a finial he said he may make a different one if he gets the right kind of wood to turn.

Two more of his turnings with different tops, Nice Job Bill.

Bill Bryan holds up a bowl he dyed and said that the wood did not receive the dye evenly, try dying one some time you will soon find our what he is talking about.

Nice one Bill. keep the turnings coming.

Frank Strong's contribution to Show and Tell. Good example of a small lidded box.

Frank shows off a nice winged box an a creation he called The Fungi Hill Farm. Nice Idea.

Two of Jack Diamond's S & T  for the month. Jack specializes in odd turnings that very few people try. Nice desk top pencil holder and a lid for on an old fruit jar for his grandson's collection. You never know what Jack will come up with.

James turns a round bottom bowl. Looks like a challenge maybe the club should have a members challenge for all members to turn one and bring it to the meeting for all to see. It would be a learning experience for all who try it.

Ralph turns some odd pieces of wood, the one at the top is a very odd shaped turning, the bottom is from a sweet gum burl and turned and separated with his center saver. He will be doing a demo using his center saver from One Way, come and see the demo Sat. Sept 20th.

George McClure shows a partial completed wood burning project. George will be doing a demonstration on wood burning in October.

Another project in progress, George says he thinks he will pierce this project, something to look forward to in the next few months.

Tom Tydlacka shows a splitter he made a handle for and a large mallet for splitting I think shingles. Very functional tool.

Robert introducing his demonstration. He showed the members how he dips his turnings.

Some of Roberts examples he showed the attendees, his way of finishing his completed creations.

Here Robert shows how he makes his bottle stoppers, drilling for the dowel rod, shaping and sanding the stopper and preparing foe the dipping process.
More of the Shaping.

Here Robert is dipping a bird house, he dips from both ends then drains the lacquer that gets into the house. He says he some times dips up to 3 times.

He dips chain pulls any small items, says beats spraying for him.

Thanks to Robert for his demonstration and taking the time to make it interesting. See you Saturday the 20th of September. Bring your show and tell items.
