That month sure did fly by fast, hope you have been turning your special piece of wood for our show and tell. Remember to bring the bark, leaves and tell us something about the wood you chose.
The club is in danger of loosing our meeting place so the committee needs your
help in finding a new spot let us know. It will have to be acceptable to store
all of the clubs equipment at a reasonable price.
We have been invited to participate at the 17th Annual Gulf Coast
Friends Arts and Craft Fair for Charity. The date for this event is November the
13, 2008 the 2nd Thursday. The location is the New World Landing
Pensacola.
The Chairperson for door prizes is Margaret Jones one of our newest members, her
address is 5023 Keystone Drive Gulf Breeze, Fl 32563 phone 934-5497 call her if
you have any questions. All the proceeds go to local charities.
Remember to be safe while you are turning. Wear dust masks, safety glasses, and no long sleeves to catch in your turning. Safety first. If you have something to share with the other members we have a safety minute during our meeting. See you there on the 19th.

As the World turns so does Mike. Don't for get to sign up for
food for the Turners July picnic and remember to bring your turning made from
wood that you have a sample of the bark and leaves so that the members can learn
about different trees we have to choose from. This should be interesting if you
all participate.

Very Good crowd considering the members missing for the symposium.

The auction had some fresh cut pecan and some of Leland's scraps which seems to
be a favorite, since you get a variety of different woods to sample.

On to the Show and Tell part of the meeting. Bill Bryan brings us several
different samples of his latest and not so new turnings. Here he shows off one
of his dyed offerings, I believe he said that it was maple.

Here Bill holds up a bowl four or five years in the making, I guess he must have
had a personal relationship with that piece of walnut, ask him about it for more
details. Looks worth the wait.

A nice platter or Frisbee, which he tossed to Larry Starkey, and a very thin
walled vase. Thanks for your effort.

Bo shows off a thin walled turning he made with a turning tool which he and Fred
Bond were experimenting with.
I believe they were using this with a Lyle Jameson rig. I think it is a Rollie
Munroe cutting tip. They came to the conclusion that they needed some more
training, something to that order.

Chuck Ward shows us what he has been making out of sea urchin shells, nice
ornaments. Chuck said he was trying to get motivated with his turning by
starting with some small things like the ornaments. Looks like he is back on
track!

More of his ornaments. Very nice Chuck.

Darnell makes a large flower pot.

Here Darnell started out to make a bowl, then decided to put a spindle under it,
still didn't quite like what he had then decided to put a base on the whole
thing, his comment was "I should have thrown the bowl away before the whole
thing got out of control. Trying to save a project, been there done that.

Durk's offering for this months meeting since he won't be at our July meeting.
He shows a bowl made from a Pop Corn Tree or
a ( Chinese Tallow Tree).

Jack shows off a stool he turned, very nice.

Here he shows a lid he made for his grandson's collections of old jars.

Leland Shows us his collection of Potpourri bowls very nice.

He did three nice turnings. I believe he has this turning thing under control.
He had one of his tables for show and tell with two legs of maple and two of
pecan and you cannot tell the difference between the two which were spaulted.

Here is his table on the S&T table.

Mark shows off a very nice natural edge bowl and very thin.

Frank shows two nice lidded boxes. As he said" getting away from canes is
good for a change."

Mike Peters shows off a table he made for Russ Revels, all of the tables have
four turnings attached to them. Very Good Mike.

The rest of the Show & Tell table. Notice under the table on the right are
three Chinese type bowls turned in by Mr. John Peebles He was to fast for
me and I didn't get his photo. They looked real nice.

On with Mike Demaline's Demonstration. He holds up the feature ring he brought
to the last meeting. Now he will show how he makes the feature ring pattern.

Nice design. Southwest pattern.

Here Mike shows the almost most completed turning. Some of the following photos
will try to show how he made the pattern for this turning.
You must have a device to glue up the pieces. Here Mike has a jig that he can
glue the pieces together and make them consistent, a repeatable process,
remember you have to make them all the same. You will notice these pieces are at
a 45 degree angle and very hard to clamp.

Shown here the layout for clamping. The two end pieces are just to get the
pattern lined up for clamping, once the design in the center is clamped he glues
in the pieces of wood he has chosen for the ends of the segment.

Switching to the pieces he wants in place. Notice the jig has duck tape to keep
the design from sticking, you can use wax paper if you like.

The glue dries in about 30 min so you can take the clamps off or you can buy
plenty of clamps. I bought a package of four 3" clamps at Blackwater Tool
for a reasonable price if you are interested in making something like this.

When the glue is dry cut the pattern in thin strips and glue them into the
pattern you want by stacking and gluing together.

For simplicity sake and the demo Mike glued up two segments with the other
blanks to simulated the rest of the bowl. You will have to visualize the other
glued up rings, otherwise he would have had to make two bowls.

Thanks Mike for the information and the Demo.
