Artistic Woodturners

                                                  Newsletter

Summer is in full swing, getting hot everywhere, hope you have an AC in your shop to make turning bearable.

In July we will have a BBQ and a special show and tell. The show and tell will be for all participants to make something out of wood, but you will have to identify the wood with some bark, leaves, or foliage from a tree, where you found it. This will help the membership learn something about the wood we have available. We are looking for as many participants as possible.

We will have a sign up sheet for food for you to bring, so remember to sign up.  This meeting is for the wives; so do not forget to invite them since they will probably be making the food to bring. Ralph will be making the BBQ.

This June meeting Mike Demaline will have the show. He is in the process of making a segmented bowl from the Bolivian rosewood to fit the feature ring he had at the last meeting. His demonstration will be showing you how to go about the process of making a segmented bowl. He also told me that he developed a rash after he turned the rosewood and had to go to the doctor for some medicine for the rash. If you have some of this wood be very careful how you turn it. WARNING: I talked to Leland and he said that you should wear a mask, rubber gloves, long sleeve shirt, a good apron and have a good dust collector. After you are finished turning for the day you should shower before you do anything else.

In the September time frame the club will either have another hands on day with several lathes and turners showing the club how to use different techniques as they apply to wood turning or, have just one demonstrator. If you would like to do a demo on something you would like to show us, just let the committee know and you can do your thing.

Some of you probably already know the Woodman may be selling the building and property that we are meeting in, so help us find a place to hold our meetings and move our equipment to, for a reasonable price. We have no idea how much time we have so help us find a place.  See you at the meeting.

Words of wisdom from our President Mike Peters about an order for some Rose Wood which Leland will pickup when he delivers some furniture to a customer.

Very attentive group, must be interesting.

Mike has the order if you are one of the folks that placed an order for the Rose Wood. Call Mike and make arrangements for pickup.

Norm is filling in for Ralph who was doing a show. Holds up a kit for a turkey call donated by the Prez. Thanks Mike!

Thanks to Leland for the boxes of wood for the auction. It seems to be all that we had this time.

Show and Tell table with some real nice turnings.

More of the same a variety of different styles and shapes.

Darnell was using his parting tool to see how thin he could make the slots in a large honey dipper. That would take a large jar of honey, or you could just burn candles in them. Nice Idea.

Bill Donahue has been turning some very fine shapes, keep up the good work.

Watch out for the genie. You may not like what he gives you.

Thank you Bill.

Durk has used some black liming wax for the texturing of this turning, said Dixie inspired him to try this, so we do get some good from the turners that come to visit us from time to time.

Here Frank shows us a turning by a beaver, said he found this stick gnawed to these specs at his sons pond up north of Pensacola.

Here Fred shows us of his turning gone bad, warp and more warp a good example of things mother nature can produce and there is nothing you can do to mould it to your liking.

Made from a bowling pin some young man brought to a meeting some time back and Fred turned it into a mallet.

George holds up a turning made from Holly a nice white wood with a dark finial, nice choice.

Two more turnings one pierced ornament and I believe he called it a clam shell box. He sure has been a busy guy.

Jen shows off a small bowl, nice to see her back at the lathe.

Here Jen shows her turning of a Banksa Pod and is holding one that she donated for the auction. She said the pods came from Highland Hardware out of Atlanta.

Leland shows one of his lighted lighthouse that he makes, the electronics is made by our president Mike Peters for a small fee you can purchase one from Mike.

A different view shows the circuit board. During his demo to day Mike will show you the procedure he goes thru to make the lighthouse blank.

Mark shows off a beautiful turned Urn made from a piece of Cedar burl, very nice piece of work and is finished with a gun stock finish.

Mike shows off  a new feature ring he is working on a Southwest US pattern. He says he makes the feature ring then designs his bowl around the ring. Keep looking for his next project in the future.

Very nice ring to start with. I am anxious to see how it turns out.

On with the Demo by Mike peters. He shows us how to make a striker with handle, a lighthouse turning for the electronics package, and donated a kit for making a turkey call. His turnings were to show some of the small items to make that sells at the furniture shows that he and Leland attend.

The Lighthouse turning

The lighthouse blank.

Turning a handle for the striker. Thanks Mike for the demo.
