February 07 Newsletter

I hope that you have been keeping warm these last few days. Standing in front of a lathe doesn’t generate much body heat and for us older guys it never does get very warm.

The demonstrations for this month will be as follows. Al McCoy and Mike Demaline will be discussing two different methods of creating a segmented bowl. Al uses a computer program and Mike uses a calculator the results ends up the same, a perfect circle in each ring each layer is larger or smaller according to their design. The rings are then sanded and glued together, and turned to form a vessel. If you break down the procedure to its simplest form this will make the task easier. Never let it get the best of you.

James McClure will be showing the membership how to turn a gouge handle for the tools that you fashion for yourself.

Jack Diamond and George McClure will be explaining how to make staves for bowls and pencil holders etc.

Last month we were supposed to show the introduction of two of Bill Grumbine's turning tapes so we will know his turning style. If we have time, we will do it this month. Bill Grumbine will be our guest turner at the March meeting.  The cost for his demo will be $20 for members and $25 for non-members. We will have a hands-on workshop with Bill on Sunday the 18th at a cost of $65. The space is limited so e-mail James McClure at jemcclure@bellsouth.net if you would like to participate. The hands-on will also be at the Woodman of the World Lodge.

The club voted to have a tool sale before the next meeting. We will have the tool sale before the next meeting. If you have any tools (turning or non-turning related, home-made or store bought) that you would like to sell to fellow club members, bring them to the tool sale. If you are selling tools, please come at 7:30 to set up. The sale will start as soon as everyone is ready (probably 7:40 or so). If you are not selling, please come early to the meeting to buy tools. The tool sale must end by 9am so we can start the meeting on time. DISCLAIMER: We are doing this as a courtesy to our members. The club assumes no liability, provides no warrantees or guarantees on anything bought or sold at the sale. All sales are between the buyer and seller. Any disputes must be handled between the buyer and seller.

Remember we will have our next turning exchange on March the 17th. We are expecting more participation based on the numbers from the Christmas party.

  SEE YOU THERE!

Photos from last meeting and a few from Leland's.

Leland had a portable sawmill come over to his place to cut up an oak tree that he decided to cut before a hurricane got to them.

Looks like a full house.

Danny the VEEP holding their attention.

Look at that show and tell table. We had a lot of wood for the auction. Thank you for the wood.

Some faces we haven't seen in a while. Thank You all for making the meeting a success.

And then the auction.

Fred Bond's red cedar vessel. Good show Fred.

Darnel turns in two nice bowls. Keep up the good work. Memory failing can't remember what kind of wood he said they were.

I think Dirk had visions of some money with his first segmented offering plate for his church.

Nice piece of wood, good looking turning.

Frank Strong turns another good looking cane, way to go Frank!

George is burning up the wood, a very nice piece.

Another good job from George. Now he is burning and painting what next.

The other side of the vessel. I guess this was next. George has been a busy guy.

Mr. Parting Tool didn't use his parting tool for this inlayed platter. Good change.

Mr. Peeple had a good use for some duck tape, he's Quacked up.

Paul Sherman's back good to see you. I believe he is holding up a small vessel. Sorry for the bad picture.

Ralph Thomas turns in another nice shape.

Nice platter by Ralph. Is that cherry?

Fred turns a bowl for his church called "His Holiness"

Bill Bryan's demo making a bracelet.

Bill putting on the finishing touch. Nice bracelet.

Al followed with a demonstration on using a hollowing rig. He had several different tools that hollowing evolved from, to a laser guided tool. He showed some segmented rings that he was going to glue on the top. He will be bringing the finishes product this meeting for Show and Tell. Al said he couldn't turn and take photos at the same time. Darn!

Photos of Leland's wood cutting party.

Looks like some nice furniture in that log.

Don't just stand there do something.

Nice cutting saw.

Hitting two nails put in that tree 30 years ago to hold up a sign hit two times.

Quite an interesting afternoon. Leland Thanks you for your help, the people that came.
