Artistic
Woodturners

Another year is coming to a close. Hope that you have achieved everything you wanted this year. Start making plans for the New Year.
Novembers meeting was without our President away at a
show, showing off his creations. The meeting was conducted by Al, and Russ
filled in for Al. Thanks Russ for the pictures.

Bill Bryan tries his hand with some dye. Looking at the puzzled look on his face
I am not sure he likes what he sees.

Bo shows a hollowing tool he made, nice going.

Here Bo shows a small ornament he created.

Another ornament. Nice to have Bo a retired Engineer from Westinghouse in our
group of turners.

Mike shows a work in progress, nice looking turning, but very troublesome
keeping it on the lathe.

Floyd showing off ornaments he made for the Optimist Club for their annual
Christmas fund raiser.

Another ornament for the fund raiser. The Optimist sell the ornaments at their
Christmas tree lot. Last year they made $600 from the sale of the donated
ornaments. We need to keep making these turnings for them all year long so we
can avoid the rush waiting till the last moment.

Here George shows off a small finger bowl.

George was inspired by last months demo by Fred Bond making the small lidded
boxes with a finial lid. Several members tried making one of these boxes, so the
demo's do inspire members to try new things. Thank you Fred for the inspiration.

Three ornaments for the Optimist Club from Al. Looks like he needs a haircut or
a violin.

A double ornament for the Optimist has already sold for $25.00. This is
something I just tried the double ornament. I had the smaller ball left over
from some earlier turning and I decided to try a double, real easy to do.

Here Jack shows his small lidded box he tried, thanks to Fred's demo. I guess we
do pay attention during the demos.

Les shows of a small lidded bowl. Some thing different for him, good job.

Looks like a Celtic knot turning. Looks like Les has started to bloom as a
turner.

Here Frank Strong turns a natural edge bowl. Jack Diamond met
Frank at a local restaurant show some of the canes he was turning. Now Frank has
expanded his turning base. Nice job.

Here Tom Tydlacka shows some instructions for sharpening a spade bit. If you are
interested in this you can call Tom and get the info from him.

Tom holds up a baby rattle one of the three he made. I have one question, How
big is this kid anyway? Good job on the rings.
We stress safety as often as we can, because turning can hurt you! The club has
started a segment of the meeting called "The Safety Moment" so here is
one moment.

Here Les shows a way to keep from gouging yourself by using plastic tubes from a
flower shop to cover your tools while being transported. Good suggestion.

Norm takes over the auction duties while Ralph was doing an art show.

And here we have some cherry ? I believe. Norm will be our new Treasurer for the
club. Thanks for volunteering. On with the demo's.

Bill stresses the importance of keeping your lathe clean and free of rust.

Scotch Brite and WD40 works well.

Jack's demo was use of the chatter tool. Here he is looking at one that Al McCoy
made. Jack purchased his and they are comparing the difference, I believe it is
dollars differences.

The Chatter tool is used on end grain wood. I'm sure that we have all had some
unwanted chatter on some of our turnings one time or the other. Here you want
the chatter the purpose of the demo. Jack uses the chatter to make fancy
multi-colored spin tops at school demos that he does at least once a year.

Jack holds up his purchased Chatter tool. This series of short demo seems
to be very popular with the members.
Al did a demo on making a pen. To members that have never
tried pen making. No photos no photographer, Russ left early.
See you at the Christmas Party, bring your wife or significant other and a
gift for the exchange. We will be drawing numbers for the turnings.
