ArtisticWoodturners

Newsletter Sept 07

Last months meeting appeared to be very popular with our members, so the committee has done it again. We will have two lathes set up with demo of Christmas tree ornaments, Jack will do his method of using ¾” lumber and show how he uses his jig. Mark McClain will show his method of making an inside/outside ornament. Mike is going to try and get someone to demo on the large lathe, if you would like to help out call Mike Peters at 994-5509.

This is the month for the gift exchange; bring a gift if you want to participate. Keep this event going it will help each participant with a collection of member’s turnings.

With Christmas close at hand and its time to participate in the Optimist Club fund raiser by donating our ornaments to them for resale. Last year I believe they made around $700 from the donated ornaments. Lee Howard said they had some left over from last year, but needed some new ones. Please remember that the money raised goes for a good cause, helping the youth of our area. Thanks to the turners who participated last year. I hope we can count on you again this year.

The safety minute we had last meeting was very informative. Keep bringing your experiences to the meeting; they may save our members from repeating the same error you did. I believe I heard one of our members saying “ if you get the feeling you shouldn’t be doing what you are about to try, don’t do it”. You will be better off
trying another route.

Coming up in October and November you will see Fred Bond doing his first demonstration. In November Mike and James will be showing you what they have accomplished with the Rose Engine. In December we will have our annual Christmas party. We have some neat things lined up for you, for instance Russ and Mike are involved in trying to make a clock, if you were at our last meeting you saw the gear train that Russ cutout with his milling machine. See you at the Meeting.

Photos from
August Meeting

What has got Mike all excited Lets wait and see. His arm looks like the bandage is gone. Can it be that?  Is it the auction, or all of the members present?

Ralph is in his glory selling the wood that will make you a better turner. He claims there is a turning in every piece of wood he sells.

Sold !!  to Dick McNeill setting in the front row.

What do you mean no one wants this piece of fine wood, remember there is a prize in every piece.

The show and tell table covers the two tables pretty well hope you had something there.

Great turnings, just remember some of this wood came from the auction once upon a time.

Fred turns in a beautiful piece of Norfolk Pine, wish I would have remembered to go to his show to see the rest of his turnings. The training is paying off. Keep up the good work.

Bill Bryan's contribution a short hollow form, said he was still going to do something with it. It looked good to the members who answered why?

Jack shows off a jig he uses to do the stave bowls.

One of the bowls he finished using the techniques from the last photo and some scrap wood he received from Leland. Nice use of the wood scraps.

Jacks secret weapon that he just unveiled. He has been looking for a long time for a device to use a indexer on his lathe and he found it on the wall of his shop.

Frank Strong says: I believe this piece of wood came from the auction, that's what I recollect hearing while snapping this photo.

Frank Buchanan shows off a nice frame in which he placed two hand painted mules belonging to a friend, both very nice.

Beautiful table Leland nice inlay wish I could remember the story that went with it.

Some very nice bud vase turned by Leland. Three different sizes of glass inserts the one he is holding is an olive jar for large plants.

Ralph shows us some of his handy work with the colors he is mixing.

If you don't like the color of the wood dye it, but use your imagination.

Here Ralph discusses the hazards of turning an open ended bowl. He says some times they crack and some times they are a different color. Beautiful shapes Ralph.

Here are the gears made for the clock that Mike and Russ are working on. Russ made them out of MDF on the milling machine he built.

This is a very very good segmented bowl made by Floyd. We need to get him to tell us how he made the design.  I hope the finish isn't still tacky. Great Job !!!

Durk's safety message " make sure the tools you use are put together well" the one in his hand came apart while using.

Our youngest and newest member made what is in the photo. Nice going Tim  McCollim.

This is Tim holding up a small lidded box. George McClure helped mentor Tim. Learns quick.

Tim had some bowling pins he was selling last meeting. He shows off his mallet made from a pin. Nice vinyl cover.

This is Al McCoy's S&T for this month. I will be gone again. I just wanted you to see this idea that I came up with. I was making a house warming gift and I used this crotch from a pecan tree, and used a screwdriver to remove the bark. I didn't think about putting the platter back into the bark until later.

We had 4 lathes set up for our demonstrations and here Ralph shows Jim Burt's friend some of his techniques for turning a bowl, with other members looking on.

Bill Bryan in this corner showing how to turn a goblet.

Jack shows several members how to use a skew.

Here is Jack's secret weapon as he called it, on his lathe for show and tell.

Robert McBroom had his lath set up to show members how to use different tools, but there wasn't anyone handy his demo before I had to leave. Thanks to all the demonstrators for your time and effort.
