Artistic Woodturners

                       Newsletter October 06

This will be a short turnaround on our monthly newsletter since we moved the date up one week. The club is taking advantage of Dixie Biggs and John Mascoll being in town for the closing day of their display “As the Wood Turns” at the Pensacola Museum of Art. There will be a reception at 5 pm in the museum in their honor.

They have agreed to do a demonstration for our club since they will be in town for the reception. The demonstration will start at 9 am on the 14th of October at our regular meeting place on Ashland Ave. There will be no charge for our members to attend. Ralph Thomas has agreed to BBQ the meat for this meeting. The club will have a potluck lunch. Members have been asked to bring a covered dish. Items we will need are potato salad; bake beans, coleslaw, buns, chips, ice, ice tea, and some large bottles of soda pop, or paper products. You might want to call James to see what people signed up for at our last meeting he passed around a sign up sheet.

Remember to bring your Christmas tree ornaments for the Optimist Club. Their tree sale will start before our meeting on November 18th. I believe their President will be here to collect the donations of ornaments please make the club proud by participating.

The steering committee instituted a safety program a few months back and so far we haven’t got it off the ground. As a whole we have had very little participation from our members. What we are asking each member to do is submit an idea for a safety minute. It can be on lathe safety, wood products that have toxic properties, finishing product, ventilation for safety, electrical safety, items that you have discovered thru life’s experiences. Remember the information that you have may save someone else the pain and suffering that you went through.

Question for the Club. Is there a type of turning that you would like to learn? If so please let any club officer know and we will try and help you get the help you want.

For you newer members the club has an extensive library dealing with turning. All you have to do is check out the books, DVDs, videos and other club information. The only things that we ask is that you return the material to the library in a timely manner. If you have items checked out and have had them longer than a month, please return so others can use the items.

The October meeting will be demos and lunch. We will not take time for show and tell or the auction so we can devote all our time to Dixie and John’s demonstration. See you at the meeting. Come to learn something new.

Some smiling faces of our happy regular members.

and some not so happy and smiley. Norm brought his wife Janet Welcome to our get together. We have room for others. What were the rest of you doing.

Our exchange gifts were as you see. We need more participation from you our members.

Some happy faces with their exchange turnings. Remember this is a way to add to your collection of wood turnings. Make something to bring or something you already have. We do the exchange quarterly.

Two serious exchange members. You notice who has the collection plate.

The auction wood. Remember the money helps us pay for our out of town demonstrators.

Thanks Leland for your scraps.

Our very own auctioneer Danny. Thank you Danny for your effort to move the items and making it exciting.

Our show and tell table with your club's display. We would like for more participation in this part of the meeting. If you are participating you are learning.

More contributions, very nice.

Another happy turner. James shows off his Mulberry turning.

George show his holy vase, looks like a piece of spaulted Pecan.

George shows us a piece of wood he got from James. Some more of the Mulberry.

Chuck shows us his large turning made on his new lathe. Nice job.

Durk shows us the item that he entered into the exchange.

We have some turnings from a first time entry, Darnell Jackson. Darnell turned in I believe four candle holders all different. He is holding one that has a globe.

Here is a photograph of Darnell turnings made from red cedar. Nice job.

Russ turns in his contribution for S & T keep them coming.

Ralph turns a very nice set of nesting bowls from burl wood very thin. Get out of the way Mike Mahoney here comes Ralph.

Serge makes wooden handles for knives. Some turning involved.

We had several demonstrations giving our members a choice as to what they wanted to watch. Here Al shows how to make an ornament out of scrap maple from a cabinet shop. Al is using a jig that Jack Diamond modified. If you are interested in making one you can go to the clubs web page and under ornament jig you can click on that and it is linked to the instructions.

Sue shows Barb how to paint on turnings. Great job!

Completed nut cracker painted by Sue.

James does a bowl turning demo out of the Mulberry he and his father have been using.

See you next month. Keep the chips flying.
