Artistic Woodturners

September 2006 Newsletter

We had another great meeting using the multiple demonstration technique and it seemed to be a great success. For those of you who didn’t attend you missed, George McClure showed a group how to do a pen, Bill Bryan turned a goblet for his contribution, and Ray Welsh demonstrated how to do an inside outside ornament.

Next month will be the same format with three different presentations. Al McCoy will show you how to make the Christmas ornament from standard ¾ inch lumber that he gets from the scraps collected at any local cabinet shop.  James McClure will show the new members the method he uses when he teaches bowl turning in Mobile, at the Woodcraft store. James is very efficient at this endeavor. You new members are in for a treat. Danny Haggard will talk about wood preparation, where to get the wood, how to cut the wood for storage, and how to treat the wood to minimize cracking. Mark McClain will show the membership how he does his inside outside ornaments. Sue will show us how to paint ornaments, so bring your ornaments, small 1/4 " brushes. Sue will have the paint for you to try  painting your own ornaments.

We took in $71.00 for the auction. Thanks to the people who brought the wood etc. for our members to buy. The money goes to help our club by subsidizing your dues. Thanks to Norm for bringing the trailer load of wood for the members to share, for a small donation to the club.

Remember to bring in your exchange gift this month. Something you are proud to show. We encourage everyone to participate. We need more members to join in the exchange.

The Pensacola Museum of Art is sponsoring a show called “As the wood turns” the two artists are Dixie Biggs and John Mascoll both Florida artists. The show will run from September 8th to October 15th support the artists by visiting the show.

Judy Ditmar will be doing a demonstration at the Emerald Coast Woodturning Guild October 14th and 15th. It will be held in Freeport Fl.

There will be a Florida Woodturning Symposium held January 12th thru the 14th 2007. Check our web site in the coming months for more information.

Do not forget to make your contribution to the Optimist Clubs Christmas tree sale. Our club volunteered to donate ornaments for them to sale. Don’t forget to sign your donations.

We had our first Safety Moment from Gary Jacobson. He was bitten by a brown recluse spider and urged all members to please check your woodpiles for spiders as they like living there. Be careful in your shop. Check out this website

Photos from our last meeting. Let me know if you want me to keep putting the photos in our newsletter. Al

Looks like we had a good crowd show up for the mini-demo's. Good to see Erika back at the meetings. She is still undergoing treatments say a prayer for her.
Show and Tell

Leland's show and tell.

James turned a bowl out of landscaping plant.

Chuck Ward shows off an unfinished piece of Yellow Poplar the first turning since moving to Freeport and on his new Jet. Chuck says it was a little intimidating, he never turned something that big.

George shows off a bowl that he turned out of a piece of heart pine from the remains of a house fire. His friend wanted him to see if he could make her something as a memento. George said it turned very well. The bowl is still in progress.

I believe this is our newest member Frank Strong he makes canes for friends. Jack Diamond met him at a restaurant showing his friend a cane and told him about our club. A new member can come from any place. Talk to people they will come. Good job Frank, I believe that this was the first time he used Corian.

Good to see Mike Demaline back doing what he does best. Segmented turning. I look forward to more of his turnings.

Ralph Thomas tries something different, he said that he was inspired to try this turning from his attendance at the Louisville AAW Symposium. Nice job! Good to see no broken fingers from this attempt. He said he turned it very carefully.

Leland shows his candle sticks.

Durk turned a spaulted pecan bowl and found our how super glue can saved the day. A lesson well learned. Keep bringing in your creations.

Mark McLain shows three very nice inside-outside turned ornaments. Mark has been turning less than a year very inspiring. He will be showing us how he makes them at our next meeting.

Barbara Thomas shows off her first turned piece from one piece of wood and was over heard saying it was used to keep Ralph in line. She normally does segmenting. Bring some of it in to show.

Lorin Later a new member who met Robert McBroom at the Hajji show an he and his father-in-law joined last month. He said he made both items with his parting tool, good job. I can't wait till he learns how to use the other tools he has.

Sue shows off two of her painted turnings very good. Can't wait till your demo.

Al holds up one of the ornaments he made for the Optimist Club. It is a tree topper.

It has been about two years since Surge has been to a meeting and he brings in this chess set he turned. Good job.

The auction raised $71.00 for the club. Don't forget to bring in some wood for the auction next month every little bit helps. Tools sell well also.

Thanks to Norm Feinberg for this load of wood. Looks like the termites found it.

Ray Welsh demos his version of the inside-outside turned ornament very good job. Thanks!
