We are into the 2006 hurricane season lets pray that we get spared this year from any storms that may develop.

Remember this month the club will have the turning exchange, so bring in your turnings for participation. The turning that you bring should be something that you are proud of and that the recipient will like. The last exchange was a huge success. Thank everyone that participated.

We are going to try and add a new feature to our meeting it will be called the “Safety Minute” if you would like to participate in this endeavor please submit your safety minute to our president and he will incorporate the minute in his business portion of the meeting. We will try and have one each month.

Remember to start making your ornaments for the Optimist Club to sell at their annual Christmas tree sale. The club encourages everyone to participate. The money earned by the Optimist goes to help the disadvantaged children here in the local area. Show us your stuff by participating in this project.

We will be having “How Too” demos for our members again this month since it was so successful the last time and was well received by all attending. We will be running the demo a little different this time. We will have five different setups and you will be free to choose the one that you are interested in learning and rotate when you choose. The demos will be as follows. Danny will be showing you how to use a skew. Ray will teach you how to make a Honey Dipper. Jack will have his jigs set up to show you how to hold your turning projects without having a chuck. James will be showing the new members how make a bowl using the bowl gouge. Bill will have his sharpening rig set up to show you how to put an edge on your tools for better turning.

On Saturday July 15th 2006 Al Hockenbery will be the turner for our meeting. He has some unique turnings that he will be showing the club. The cost for Saturday will be $10 for members and $15 for non-members. On Sunday Al will have a hands on demonstration for at least 8 people. The cost for this event will be $40 per person and will be held in OB’s shop starting at 9 am. James has room for 6 more people; if you are interested you can e-mail James or call him and let him know you will be attending.

The Business portion of May meeting. Anticipation of things to come.

Awaiting to hear from Tony, bright eyed and bushy tailed members.

Tony's handout instructions for accomplishing his techniques at carving on wood using a high speed dental tool.

Tony explains some of his techniques on how he accomplishes his layout of the pattern that he applies to the wood he is embellishing.

A sampling of his work on different selections of wood.

Would you please get on with the carving we want to get out of here at 12am.

Think you could do that Floyd? says Erica.

Tony selects one of his Mylar flowers which has a sticky back that you place on your bowl to outline your flower on your turning. His suppliers for the flowers etc. come from all sources, coloring books, leather craft patterns, wood burning books, the list is goes on and on.

Outlining your pattern with very small cutting tool.

Tony uses the magnifier lenses to enhance his view of the pattern, said it makes it easier to stipple and cut with lenses, by enlarging what you see. OB uses a large desk magnifier with a light, seems to work better for him he says.

Sunday hands on session Tony shows Mike some of his techniques.

Adjusting the pressure on the vacuum control.

Tony shows Al how to use the football tip for shaping the leaves on his bowl.
Thanks Tony for another avenue to pursue and advancing our techniques.
