Artistic Woodturners
April  2006 Newsletter

We wil be bringing in demonstrators for the May and July meetings.  The steering committee has decided to provide a light lunch at these events and it will be included with the attendance fee.  The lunch will probably be sub sandwiches.

Tony Cortese will be here May 20th for an all day club demo and May 21st for a hands-on workshop at O.B.’s.  Tony does relief carving on turnings.  His web page is:  http://www.tonycortese.org/.  The fee for attending the club demo is $7 for members and $10 for non-members.  The fee for the hands on workshop is $100 per student (payable directly to Tony).  Please let James McClure (jemcclure@bellsouth.net) know if you are interested in participating in the hand-on session.  We are also looking for high speed (400,000 rpm dental type) drills for the hands-on workshop.  If you have one that can be used for the workshop, please let James know.

Al Hockenbery will be here July 15th for an all day club demo and July 16th for a hand-on workshop.  Al does functional and artistic turnings.  His web page is:  http://www.hockenbery-woodturnings.com/.  The fee for the club demo is $10 for members and $15 for non-members.  The fee for the hands-on workshop will be based on the number of students, but will most likely be in the $40 - $60 range.  The hands-on workshop will be on how to turn a solid sphere (including how to make the cup chucks which are required to do this).  Please let James know if you are interested in participating in the hands-on workshop.

The woodturning exchange will start with the April 15th meeting.  The club challenge for the April meeting is to bring something for the woodturning exchange.  All participants that bring something to exchange will be entered in a drawing for a $20 gift certificate from Packard Woodworks.  To participate in the woodturning exchange, bring a nice turning to be given to a fellow club member.  It should be nice, something that you are proud of, and of the quality that you would give it to someone as a gift.  If you want to participate and cannot come to the meeting, then send your turning with a friend or contact one of the officers, however, you must be present to win the gift certificate.

The April meeting will be a “Back to Basics” meeting were we cover the basics such as sharpening, basic tool usage (spindle gouge, bowl gouge, and others…),  methods to attach wood to the lathe and a tool sharpening station.   There will be some hands-on opportunities also.  If you have a tool that needs sharpening or don’t know how to sharpen it, please bring it to the meeting.

The Blackwater get together was a success. Hope that you attended to support your club. We had a sign up sheet for people interested in joining the club and we had six signatures on the list. I will start this week to try and contact them and urge them to attend the next meeting. There was a garage door opener found in their parking lot, if it is yours, Please contact Caleine in their office. See you at the meeting. 15 April starting at 9 am.

Don't forget items for the wood auction. And bring in your latest creations for Show & Tell.

Burt did a fine Job with the set up. Luther and Judy seem snug as a bug. With their carvings and Judy's wood  boxes finished a wood burning pen.

Hand carved mantles were part of the show.
