March 06 Newsletter
Hi All ! Another month has passed and we keep
the wood turning on our lathes. For the members who responded to Leland's call
for help at his last wood cutting session at his shop. A good time was had by
all the attendees and they shared in the wood that was cutup, Pecan, Red Cedar,
Mulberry, Cherry, and Dogwood. After the wood was cut up we went to China Star
for their lunch buffet. LeLand has one of these sessions about every 6 weeks.

As you will recall the club will be meeting this time at Blackwater Tool from 9
am to 3 pm on Saturday the 18th of this month. This session will be for the
purpose of introducing Pensacola to the art of woodturning, and we will be
sharing the day with the FloraBama Cut-ups who will be showing our guests how
they do there thing.
We are all invited to set up a table on their grounds to display your own work.
You will have permission to sell your creations if you wish. Members are
responsible for bringing your own tables and booth if you want to participate in
the show. We will have several of our members doing demonstrations for the
public. If you have something you would like to share with the public please
feel free to bring your ideas. Several of our members are bringing their own
Midi lathes and we will have the two club Midi lathes for your use. There will
be time for everyone that wants to participate. If you want to do a demo Call Al
McCoy at 434-1687. We just want to know if you are doing a demo.
Since the March meeting will be at
Blackwater River Tools, the newsletter will serve as the announcements that we
normally make at the beginning of the meeting.
The steering committee has not scheduled a demo for the April or June meetings
yet. If you are interested in doing a demo or have an idea for a demo
topic, please let one of the officers know.
For the May meeting, we are looking into bringing
in Tony Cortese to do a demo and hands on workshop on piercing and relief
carving. You will be receiving an e-mail with more information about this
event.
For the July meeting, we will have Al Hockenbery (http://www.hockenbery-woodturnings.com/)
here for a demo and hands on workshop. The hands on workshop will be on
how to turn a sphere. Here are some notes from Al about the hands on
workshop:
Turning a
ball is a great skill and confidence builder. Practice turning balls
will improve tool control and the ability to form pleasing curves on bowls and
hollow vessels. Each student would need a lathe, Side ground
bowl gouge, Parting Tool, and Spindle gouge, 8' calipers, rule or Vernier
calipers. Students
need to have mastered basic tool usage sort of advanced beginners.
Charge for the Al Hockenbery hands on demo will be based on
the number of students. I expect it to be in the $40 to $60 range.
Please let one of the officers know if you are interested in participating in
the hands on workshop with Al Hockenbery.
There will be a small charge for each of the club
demos to help defray the cost of bringing the demonstrators. We will also
look into providing lunch and/or snacks at these events to minimize the amount
of time needed for a lunch break. We will let you know more at the next
meeting about the charge for each demo.
UPCOMING CHALLENGE
Good news!!! We just got some gift certificates from Craft Supplies and we
will be giving these out as prizes when the Packard certificates run out.
The club challenge will resume at the April meeting. The
challenge for the April meeting is to turn something that can be used in the
dining room.

your dues and let him know if any of your personal information has changed.
The AAW Symposium in Louisville, KY will

The club was visited by the President of the local Optimist International C. V.
Lindley. His purpose was to get our club to donate Christmas ornaments for their
annual fund raiser, Christmas Tree sales. Their purpose is to raise money for
their kids programs. The committee would like our club to participate in this
program.

Our auction brings in more money for the club around $60.00 each and every
month. Keep bringing in your wood, but make sure that it is usable and you would
turn its yourself.
We had another visitor to our club, Mr. Don Harris of the FloraBama Cut-ups
brought us a carved sign with our club name on it. Thank you Don. He also
displayed some of his collection of butter presses and Bowl & Pestle. He
will be with us at Blackwater Tool.
Nice contribution to the clubs Show and Tell portion of the meeting. Great Idea
Danny. Keep the ideas going. This months theme was a turning that fit together.

Mark McClain turns in a hollow form and a very nice six or seven piece entry for
the club challenge. (no Picture).
We had some visitors from the deep north, Snow Birds staying over in Destin for
a few weeks. They came to see if they could get some different types of wood to
turn after the freeze. I believe James filled one of their request for some Eucalyptus.
I don't know if they got any more of their requested wood.
