Artist Woodturners June 05 Newsletter

The steering committee met at our president’s home for this months planning. We had the normal turnout for our meeting.

The committee discussed the up and coming turning demonstrations for the kids for the month of June. The turnout is a little sparse but we will carry on for the children who show up. We will have a session Saturday the 4th, the 11th, and on the 18th they will attend our regular meeting. The last session will be on the 25th. These sessions will be held at the Woodman lodge from 9 am to 12 am each of the Saturdays. As members of the club you are encouraged to attend these sessions and give the assigned instructors your help and support.

Bill Brian will have the demonstration for this month. His task it to teach us how he makes a genie bottle. Bill says you have to bring your own genie. This project should be informative to all, as I have not tried to make one of these items.

The club challenge for this month is make a tool that you can put to use turning your projects in the future. July the challenge will be a Genie Bottle from the membership. The board is striving to get 100% participation in this area. If you have not participated in the past challenges the board encourages you to turn in a challenge each and every month, not only will you be busy, you will learn how to be a better turner. Isn’t that what we joined the club for, to learn how to turn. The demonstration for July will be Jack Diamond showing how to make a pull top. Al McCoy will show us how to make throw top. August the challenge will be make a child’s toy. This will be for your child or your Grandchildren.

The demonstration for August will be a suspended vessel and the demonstrator will be Ray Welch I believe this will be his first demo. Welcome Ray!

September the club Challenge will be a suspended vessel and a demo by Michael Peters. Mike will show the club how to make a turkey call out of a piece of slate. We will learn more about this, as the time gets closer.

The auction part of the meeting needs more participation from our members. The committee is asking the members to bring items of wood for auction or tools. One of the stipulations is if you wouldn’t turn the wood because it is rotted don’t bring it to the auction. The wood should be in good condition and accepted by the auctioneer. The money raised from the auction goes right back into the club for the items that everyone enjoys, new lathes, tapes, and books, for the library, TV etc. You get the picture. The only other income is from dues. If anyone has an idea for raising some money please bring it up at the meeting.

Don’t forget about the deadline for applying for a grant from AAW.

Mark your calendar for the AAW National Symposium at Overland Park, Kansas July 22-24.

Our Webmaster is looking for some ideas to make our web site better with a new and improved look. If any of our members have any ideas on how to do projects that can be photographed with instructions help a person do a project. We have the expertise in our club to complete a project like this. Bring your ideas to the meeting for development into a great project.

Show and Tell portion of the Woodturning club meeting

Danny Haggard shows off his flower arrangement that he created for his wife. His flowers are inserted into the glass test tubes set in the wooden stems he turned, nice idea.

Mike Peters shows off one of his creation, a large handle for a tool. He was heard mumbling something to the effect that it was dangerous to create something that could be misconstrued as being a weapon to keep him in line. His creation of pen and pencil box won the $20.00 gift certificate from Packard Woodworks. Nice Job.

Kurt Forbes turned several entries for S & T  one shown here is a goblet made from cedar. Kurt is one of our relatively new turners. Keep turning and you will develop into a fine turner.

Les Phipps turned in a nice hurricane lamp. Al McCoy made his wife a dusting brush.

Our auctioneer is up to his old tricks, check the grin on his face, he seems to be up to no good, but this portion of the meeting is very helpful to the club, all of the proceeds goes into our treasury to help defray the costs of running this club. Thanks to those of you who bring items for auction.

Robert McBroom did a demo on how to make a tool from different types of steel available on the market. Here he shows one of his tools. Thank you Robert for all your help in other demo you have done for us.
