Artistic Woodturners
September 04 Newsletter
Hello Woodturners! Hope your summer
has been a good one. We are moving into hurricane season and they seem to be
coming one after the other. One thing about hurricane season is the
contribution to our wood supply. I hope they all stay at sea.
Our next meeting will be on the 18th
of this month at our usual place starting at 9 A.M. There are some exciting
things taken place. One of our members Leland Leonard has donated a TV and
built a cabinet to store it in, there is enough room for the storage of our
two club lathes and their accessories. We have ordered a TV camera to use for
our demonstrations so that you have a better view of what is going on. We
should hopefully have it in use this meeting.
Remember! We will be having our club
elections for President and VP so come and help elect a new slate.
The AAW has two medium size lathes
that were used at the symposium in Orlando last month. They will be having a
drawing to give the lathes away. The way to get your name into the pot is by
joining our club or renewing your membership in our club. Your name will be
added to the drawing up until December. It will be to your advantage to join
or renew prior to that. The winner will receive a lathe and his home club will
receive the other one.
Jack Diamond will do the September
demonstration; he will be showing us how to make a captive ring on a turning.
Next month the Presidents Challenge will be "Turning a Captive
Ring". The club has gotten a little out of sequence, so we are attempting
to get back to doing the demo, then the following month the Presidents
Challenge will have been demonstrated the prior month. The challenge for
October will be a captive ring. James McClure, "Turning a Ladle", is
doing the October demo, something he learned in Orlando. The month of
November's challenge is you guessed it turning a "Ladle". The club
would like to keep this order so that we can hold down the confusion.
We will have a new feature at our
meetings "Question and Answer" If you have a question and need an
answer just ask one of our panelists, we have selected four of our members
that have been turning for a few years. If the question is related to
something turned on the lathe and it can be demonstrated on the club lathe you
will be shown at that time how to solve your problem and have your question
answered. The other questions will also be answered before you go home.
Chuck Ward will be bringing in his
Vacuum Chuck that he has built for his own use, to show you how it works, and
where he got the pieces to build the chuck.
There will be a discussion on turning
some Christmas tree ornaments. The ornaments will be placed on a tree for
Hospices if we are not to late for this year to complete the project.
Do not forget to bring in your
turnings for "show and tell". This part of the meeting has started
to yield some very nice turnings. Keep them coming.
Bring wood and tools you no longer
need for the club auction.
