Artistic Woodturners
June 04 Newsletter
Good turning to all of our members.
Hope that you have been taking advantage of the wood that is available for
free just for the taking. Listen for the noise of a chain saw when you are out
and about. You may see wood along side the roads as you are driving around the
area. The latest find is some cut up Camphor lying along side of the road. If
you want some of the wood it is located on Mason Ln. just off 29, south of the
Brentwood Elementary School. Turn east on Mason Ln The wood is stacked at the
first home on the left.
This month we will be giving away a
door prize. The President's Challenge is a 6 to 8" plate or
platter. The reason for the small size is, not every turner has a large enough
lathe to make his or her entry larger. We want as much participation as we can
get. The steering committee is trying to get all members interested in turning
the challenges to help develop their skills as a turner. The committee has
decided that we will be having more teaching type demonstrations and more
hands on turning during the short time we have each month using the newly
acquired lathes. The meeting last month was supposed to be that way but we all
got side tracked by a snake oil salesman.
The demonstrations for this month are
as follows; OB will be teaching us how to figure out the shape and proportion
of your turnings. Robert McBroom will be teaching you the merits of the skew,
one of the necessary tools in your collection. Al McCoy will show you some of
the wooden devices you can fabricate to make turning more enjoyable and
self-gratifying, using a hot glue gun and carpet tape to mount your turnings
for reverse turning.
The Club challenge for the next few
months will be as follows.
July: Any turning in miniature form.
No larger than 1 1/2 inches in any direction using any type of holding device.
August: A functional honey dipper.
Sept: Captive ring on any spindle type turning.
The Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. will be
having John Jordan do a demo for their club on the 19th and 20th of June at a
cost of $25 for each day. The demo will be held in Canton Miss. At the Trolio
Hotel in Canton Miss. I am told there is plenty of lodging available.
If you would like to attend contact Clyde Hare at chare@jam.rr.com
or call 601-924-4275 before 15 June. The clubs web sight is www.magnoliawoodturners.com
Enclosed are some photos of the Demo
at Heritage Village on Sat the 5 th.
