Artistic
Woodturners
January 04 Newsletter
Happy New
Year.
The
steering committee has some great things planned for the members, grab hold
and hang on for 2004.
The
meeting will be held at the Woodman of the World Lodge at 9050 Ashland Ave on
the 17th of January beginning at 9 a.m. This is a special meeting with a
demonstration by Mark Gardner a gifted young turner and is presently studying
under some of the world's best and notable turners. He has items in several
galleries and museums all over the country. I will attach some photos of his
work with this newsletter hope you can view them.
The Demo
by Mark is going to be paid for by the club for Saturday. The president will
be meeting with the directors of Woodman this week to get the hours extended
for our next meeting and future meetings. The extended time will be used for
people wanting to receive help on their specific problem.
Note: In
order to participate in Mark Gardner's demo your membership must be current
for you to attend. You can pay your dues at the door.
Mark will
be doing a demo on Sunday the 18th at OB's shop the cost of this demo will be
$35 per person. If you wish to attend the workshop at OB's please call OB at
994-0880 and reserve a spot for yourself. There is room for 12 to 15 turners
so let OB know if you can attend. He needs your money or commitment ASAP at
least by the 9th of January.
The
President's challenge is a rolling pin for this month. The January demo for
the Sphere will be given in February all the others will be moved ahead one
month.
The
membership is growing by one to two new members each month and that is very
good. As a club we would like to be in a learning/training mode, so the
committee wants some input from the members as to what you want to learn. If
you have a skill in some aspect of woodworking or turning that you want to
pass on to others let our president know so we can get others into the
demonstrating mode. One way to learn how to do something new is to teach
others how to do it.
The
committee is urging each member to become a member of AAW for the good of the
club. It is a requirement of each chartered club to have a percentage of its
membership enrolled in the AAW to remain a chartered club. With the membership
you will receive four issues of the AAW magazine with how to do items and
timely information on turning. The winter issue contains instructions on how
to make micro tools, translucent bowls, and what is happening in the world of
turning. Your name address and telephone number will be published in the AAW
membership directory if you want it published. I have used the directory to
meet other turners while on vacation in Pennsylvania, a way to meet
interesting people.
Something
to put on your calendar as a reminder. The 2004 18th Annual AAW Symposium will
be held in Orlando Florida July 23-25 at the Caribe Royale in Orlando you can
go to woodturner.org for more information.
