Artistic Wood Turners
November Newsletter

This newsletter will be on time this month, for sure, without a show to get ready for. Hope that the membership is enjoying the meetings that we are having at our new location. This location doesn't impose on any of our members. I would like to take the opportunity to thank Mr. O. B. O'Brien for putting up with the club, in his shop, as long as he did. THANK YOU OB.

The club challenge for this month is a Lidded Box. Members have no excuse for not bringing an entry this month, because the demo last month showed you how to make a lidded box. The steering committee has designed this new format so that we can teach more turners and help them build their self-confidents. There are several members of the club who have volunteered to help anyone wanting a one on one session. If you want some help on turning just ask at the next meeting. Our older members are in the training mode.

I know that our membership's turners are very talented in almost all aspects of wood turning. We are asking our members who have these skills to share them with the club. I am sure that you have heard the old saying, "if you want to learn something, teach it". We need some volunteers to do the demos.

The club challenge for December is the Christmas tree ornament so that means we will have a demo on making an ornament this meeting. Jack Diamond did a demo on the ornament in September, but he will not be doing it again. We will have some examples of his method for you to look at and show you how he did the ornaments. Al McCoy will be doing a different type of ornament; it will be the inside outside turned ornament. Some of you may remember that was a club challenge some months back. Al will have a demo on how to polish their projects on the lathe with his method of polishing. There are so many ways to polish and his is one of them.

The membership is growing, and for the newer members we have our own web sight at www.artisticwoodturners.com check it out.

As of this month we have our own lathe to do our demos. Mike purchased a JET Midi lathe for the club. The new meeting place has a storage area for the lathe, so the demonstrators do not have to bring their own lathe.

The club is trying to get a grant from the AAW to purchase items.  The grant is in the process of being written. The grants are accepted two times a year. I believe we will be submitting for the Summer Grant the application must be received by January the 15th 2004.
