Artistic Wood Turners
October Newsletter

Sorry this letter is running a little late this month. I was waiting for the steering committees’ meeting to make sure that the information I was putting out was up to date. We met last night at our President’s house for about a two-hour meeting.

The Committee is concerned about getting the general membership involved in participating in the clubs activities, such as turning for show and tell, and also the club challenges. The reason people join an organization is to help further their goals, to teach others the art of woodturning, and keep the public informed about us. The committee is asking you for your support.

This meeting will be at our new meeting place at the Woodmen of the World Lodge at 9050 Ashland Ave. 9 am Saturday the 18th of October. This facility is a fine spot for our purpose, as some of you know is very nice. They have plenty of parking for members, some storage for club equipment should we acquire a lathe or two to do our demonstrating, a kitchen for preparing food should we choose to use it, and a nice seating arrangement. Hope you can come and check us out on Saturday.

The Club Challenge for this month will be a simple turned bowl up to a 6-inch diameter. The committee has decided to publish the challenge three months in advance so that you have time to create something to enter. November challenge a Lidded Box, and December will be a Christmas Tree Ornament.

We will have two demonstrations for you. Robert McBroom will be showing you how to turn a lidded box so that you will know how to do one. If you notice that the lidded box is the challenge for November. We are trying to show the members one month in advance how to do the challenge.

Al McCoy will show you how to photograph your turning projects and have an uncluttered background, a very simple method to do photographing. You may have to buy a few things, not expensive, to do this relatively easy task. Come see how easy it is to accomplish. He will have several examples of photos that he has taken.

The Committee has made the decision to have your dues due on the anniversary of you joining the club. The treasurer will have a list of due date of each member and it will be published for each meeting. The computer has made this an easy task to keep you informed.

The club is in the market for other demonstrators, if you have something to show the membership please let one of the officers know so we can schedule you for one of our meetings. Don’t be shy. The best way to learn is to teach someone else how to do a task. Share your experience with others. Check this out www.turningwood.com/sanding.htm
