Artistic Wood Turners

August Newsletter

Another month is upon us.  Time for another learning experience for all Woodturners, Every day should be a new challenge in able to advance in your turning skills.

The meeting this month will be on the 16th of August at 9 am in the shop of Leland Leonard located at 537 Brent Lane in Pensacola. He is directly across the street from the AAA office. There is some parking on his lot and at a medical clinic east of his shop. There are plenty of places to eat within walking distance from his shop. China Star, Checkers, McDonalds, and a short drive, to Ryan's, and the Waffle House.

The Presidents challenge will be a birdhouse or a goblet. OB will be on his honeymoon to Mexico during this meeting and will not be here.

This club was formed to further our skills in woodturning. I have observed in my two and a half years of coming to our meetings that there are a few people who bring their turnings to every meeting. It also is the same people who do the demonstrations. We have people who do not participate they bring nothing to the meeting and learn nothing. We have members who have offered to do one on one or small groups with our membership and so far there has been very few members participating in this service that the club has to offer, it maybe that these members want to turn, but are shy about asking or participating. The members that have offered their services are as follows Jack Diamond, Bill Bryan, OB, and Al McCoy. If I have left out someone please let me know. In order for a person to grow in this endeavor participation is the best teacher. The clubs goal is to teach all our members to become better turners from the beginner to the journeyman. We are asking that each member evaluate your position and see if you are satisfied with your progress.

The artisticwoodturners have very few members signed up in AAW. It is to your advantage to belong to this organization with the subscription to their magazine with helpful hints about turning and being insured. I was talking to Lyle Jameison at his demonstration in Hattiesburg the 19th and 20th and he said that to be a member in the club he is affiliated with back in Michigan it is mandatory to belong to the AAW, so we have both extremes, which do you want?

The demonstrators for this meeting will be Jack Diamond, Robert McBroom and Leland Leonard. Jack will be showing you how to make small quick items on the lathe such as chain pulls, bottle stoppers, wooden lids, and do a demo on how to make a hollow egg. Robert will be showing you how to do goblets, birdhouses, and other small items. Leland will doing bud vases or flower vases, also show the club members how to use his duplicator. After the meeting there will be a type of one on one with members who would like to stick around for a personal experience with the demonstrator.

Don't forget about show and tell. We all learn about turning at show and tell. Bring some of your creations.

The auction will have something special Leland will donate some of his wood from his own stock to the club for some lucky bidder. Have a great meeting. The club has some free Mulberry at Leland's already cut up for you; several members of the club rescued it from a fire and cut the wood just for you.

Note I sent some pictures with the newsletter but the file was too large, so I am sending just the text version Going on vacation and don't have time to correct the size of the photos. Some of you may have received the first transmission.
