April Newsletter
Artistic Woodturners
The meeting will be held at OB's in Pace Florida. Saturday April 19 starting at 9 a.m. We will not be taking a lunch break, so if you want to eat, bring your own brown bag lunch.
Update on the South Florida wood swap will soon take place. If club members want to participate in this swap, you need to get your donations (wood) Over to OB's place real soon. You must participate, to receive some of their wood. They will be bringing Cabbage Palm, Avocado, Mango, Cuban Mahogany and Citrus.
OB, Floyd Harmon, and Bill Sullivan attended a one-week course with Binh Pho at Arrowmont in Gatlinburg Tenn. They will be showing what the brought back. The course consisted of airbrush coloring, piercing and gold leaf application. There creations were great. They will be on display at our meeting.
The Presidents Challenge for this month will be a Hollow Form.
Bring your chain saw and end grain sealer to this meeting. There is plenty of wood at OB's for the club. Come and get this wood before the termites do. OB will be demonstrating the proper and safe use of a chain saw and how to cut up logs to obtain bowl blanks, hollow forms, grain orientation and quarter-sawn sections.
OB will do a second demo on how to mount various pieces of wood on a lathe for natural edge bowls, Hollow-forms, etc. This should be helpful to all turners, both old and new. I learn something new at every meeting. Life is a learning process and woodturning is a slice of life.
Don't forget to bring your turnings for the show and tell part of the meeting. This to is part of learning how to turn wood. We hope that everyone will participate in this evolution.
Members are reminded that the club dues are due if you haven't already paid. Please see Mike Demaline at the meeting or send your payment to his home address 9999 Sunday Road, Cantonment Florida 32533. Members $20 and Family membership $35
Mike showed the members the steps in preparing a segmented bowl at our last meeting from beginning to turning the bowl on a lathe. He didn't finish the bowl at the last meeting due to the time involved, he informed me this week that he has finished his turning and will be bringing to the meeting to show the finished product.
As you all know the club has a wood auction at each meeting, so if you want to bring wood donations for auction you may do so. The money goes into the treasury for future projects. If you have tools and such you would like to sell you can bring them, other members may just be looking for something you have. See you there, at OB's
