Artistic Woodturners

January  Newsletter

Now that the holidays are out of the way we can get back to the business of turning. The club is looking forward to increasing our membership and honing some new skills for all its members.

The club will be meeting at OB's shop at 9 am on Saturday January 18, 2003 in Pace Florida. We will be welcoming some new prospective members, so lets make them feel welcome.  Bring your own lawn chairs and a brown bag lunch; coffee and soft drinks will be available.

We are bringing back the club challenge. The challenge for this January meeting will be a simple functional bowl no larger than 8 inches across, suitable to eat your breakfast cereal out of. We will decide at the meeting how the winner will be chosen and a suitable prize will be
awarded.

There will be three or more lathes set up for on going demonstrations. We will try to cover demos for beginners, intermediate and advanced turners. This set up will be similar to the meeting in November. The club wants to be responsive to all the members needs. To the newer turners we want you to feel free to ask your inquiring questions so that you can advance your skill level and confidence. For instance I feel that the most important part of turning is having a sharp tool and learning how  to ride the bevel, once you master this you can start to enjoy the craft of turning. If you have something that you are proficient at we would like you to share your knowledge with the club. The way the members learn is from each other so bring your ideas and share.

The demonstrations will be as follows; Bill Brian will demo how to make goblets, Sergei Sestnov will demo the fine art of organizing your tools; OB O'Brien will demonstrate the use of the McNaughton coring tools. We will have available other turners to help with problems or
demonstrate other turning techniques.

The membership is encouraged to bring your latest or not so late turnings for the part of the meeting that I like a lot. The Show and Tell portion gives each participant a chance to let the club see what you are doing.

The following portion of the meeting is fairly new, but seems to be catching on quite well the AUCTION. The club is asking you to bring in and donate a piece of wood, tool or wood related items that could be used for woodworking to be auctioned off. The last few months this event has
added some money to our treasury. If you have items collecting dust or you no longer have a need for them consider donating them to the club.
