Artistic Woodturners
November Newsletter

Time flies when you're having fun or retired. What Ever!

Our November meeting will be at OB's starting at 9 am Saturday the 16th. We will be having demos for making small items that you can give for Christmas presents.

The following Turners will be doing demos. Jack Diamond ---- Ornaments/Bird Houses; Bill Brian ---- Goblets/Scoops; Dan Lovelace ---- Throw Tops; Robert McBroom ---- Dip ornaments; Floyd Harmon ---- Boxes; Gary Jacobson ---- Potpourri Boxes; Al McCoy ---- Turn Corian. We will have several small lathes setup and the members can watch what they want. If you are not one of the volunteers and would like to do a demo just bring your stuff and you will be given an opportunity to turn. This sounds like a fun time, put it on your calendar.

Our club has been invited to participate in the Craft show at St Anne's November 30 and Dec 1. That is a Saturday and Sunday. The hours of operation are Saturday 11 am till 10, pm and on Sunday from 2 pm to 10 pm set up will be on Friday the 29th from 4pm to 8 pm. We will be required to provide our own tables. It will be held in the Family Life Center Hall. The space we have is 10' x 10'. Members who have items for sale will man the booth. If you have items to sell see Al McCoy for information. The club expects your entries to be of good quality for the show. The club has been asked to do a demo the two days we are there, if you want to volunteer let us know. One of our members will provide a lathe for the demo.

An alternative meeting place will be brought up for discussion at our next meeting. An offer to meet at the Corry Field Hobby Shop on a Sunday afternoon starting at 1 pm. Think about the possibility.

I will be writing a letter to the AAW about getting a grant to purchase at least two lathes to use in our demos. If you can think of other places the club can do demos let the club know where they are located.

Our meetings will try to be informative to the new and older turners alike. As you can see from the agenda for the 16th, there will be an attempt to do a hands-on at every meeting. The club needs to be the mentor for all the new members to keep them motivated to stay active, which I believe is a must if we are to grow and keep our members interested. Teaching the basics of woodturning on how to use the tools of our trade, the bowl gouge, the scraper, and the skew are the basic turning tools. Teaching can be accomplished by having a hands-on session at our meetings and by members mentoring in their home shops one or two apprentices at a time. Please give us some feed back! See you at the meeting
